Painting when I don’t feel like it

Some of the best advice I’ve ever been given was to paint even when I didn’t feel like it.  There are definitely times when I don’t want to paint at all.  But the times when I choose to pick up the brush anyway have always been very rewarding.  Some of my best work has been done after pressing through a few grueling minutes of “I just don’t feel like painting!”.

There’s a lot to be said for cultivating a habit, the character, of doing something that ‘goes against your grain’ , something you just don’t want to do.  I mean, what would we look like if we just did what felt good at the moment?  What kind of existence is that?  Hardness is a good thing in our lives.  Even going through the small battle of “should I paint today even though I really don’t want to” helps us grow.  And there are rewards that come with that, like becoming a better painter, a better person.  Maybe a cliche, but I just don’t want to end up like the people on WALLE.
